How to read an HS code

An HS code describes a product precisely. The first 6 digits are the same worldwide; each country adds more detailed digits after them.

  2. 71HeadingData-processing machines
  3. 30SubheadingPortable machines

What decides your duties?

  • HS code

Sets the duty rate that applies to the goods.

  • Customs value

Usually based on the value of the goods including freight and insurance (CIF).

  • VAT & other taxes

Such as VAT, plus any additional charges for specific product categories.

  • Trade agreements

Goods from some countries get exemptions or reductions — with the right certificate of origin.

Common mistakes that delay release

  • Vague product description on the commercial invoice
  • Choosing the wrong HS code
  • Missing permits or certificates required for some goods
  • Mismatched data between the invoice and the bill of lading

Tariff questions

Information on this page is for guidance only; the Egyptian Customs Authority is the final reference.

Is the customs tariff fixed?

No. Tariff rates are amended by official decrees from time to time, so always check the current official tariff.

What do I need to identify the HS code?

An accurate product description, the material it is made of, what it is used for, and sometimes a catalogue or photos.

Who decides the final HS code?

Egyptian Customs approves the final code when reviewing the shipment. Our role is to help you choose the right one from the start to avoid delays.

How accurate is the duty estimate?

It gives a quick indication based on the values you enter. The final amount depends on the customs valuation and any extra fees for your goods — ask us for an exact quote.
